10 reasons why you’ve been doing laundry wrong

Washing. It seems so simple right? Well…yes and no. Here’s a bunch of top tips that will get you doing laundry at our 5 FOAM locations like a complete boss. We’ve asked the pros at our commercial operations and here’s what they had to say.

Capture rogue socks before they escape. We’ve all lost a sock or two and let’s face it, socks are sneaky! They hide. They disappear. Where they go to party is one of life’s mysteries! Pro tip: Never lose one again by washing them in a self-contained mesh sock bag.

Cold temps can be good temps. Cold water is great for delicate fabrics, particularly items that could shrink and those with sensitive dark colours that could bleed out into other items. It’s often overlooked but if you have clothing that needs a bit of care taken, cold is good.

Warm it up. With synthetic fabrics, particularly items like polyester, rayon and nylon – warm water settings are excellent and useful on moderately soiled fabrics.

Some like it hot. It can depend (and always check washing instructions) but hot water temps we find are great for bedding items, towels and when you have really tough stains. Particularly oil and grease.

Less detergent can be more. The biggest mistake people make at home (and even on our dedicated machines where they bring in their own detergent) is to use way too much of it. Overdosing detergent actually creates more suds and that can redeposit soil on clothes rather than removing it! Next time use half as much and see what happens. Or just stick to our automated machines that carefully place set amounts on your clothing. You’ll have less guesswork and better results.

Be quick on stains. It’s sometimes hard to act fast when you’ve got stained gear, we know! However as soon as you get a stain, adding cold water, applying a stain remover and getting it into a FOAM machine as quick as you can does give you the best chance of removing it well. Leaving things too long in a basket at home is never a good idea.

Watch those colours. Colourfast means an item is washable in a way that won’t bleed into other items in the wash. However, how can you tell if something is colourfast if washing it for the first time? To check, wet a cotton swab and rub it in an inside colour or seam. If you get colour on the swab it will certainly bleed through your wash. If ever in doubt, separate out washable items by colour, and be super-careful with tie-dye and new garments, particularly if bought from markets or overseas.

Go inside out. Ever wondered how to protect clothes from fade? Or get your favourite jeans to hold their look for longer? Turn them inside out before washing. It works great on dark clothes and reduces abrasion that can dull appearances.

Reduce those wrinkles. It’s a little known secret but fabric softeners actually mean your clothes come out less creased and wrinkled. That’s a great thing about Foam’s auto machines which have softener. Also, by setting low temps and removing clothes from a dryer quickly and folding can also help reduce the lines.

Not every item needs the dryer. So write an exclusion list first. We see it a lot. People come to Foam, plonk items in a washer, move to a dryer and out they go. We get it. Life moves fast, and so should your washing. However what most many don’t realise is a lot of items don’t need the dryer and will be better if they’re bagged up, taken away wet and hung up carefully later. Items that do better without the dryer include bras (they lose shape), items with a lot of elastic (such as activewear), swimwear, hosiery, lingerie and delicate fabrics, knits (they’re often best dried flat), faux/fake fir on hoodies and jackets (it can fall out), and items with beading or sequins (which can actually melt!).
